Water to Wine

Day 3: I want to focus on one particular part in chapter 2 of John and that is when Jesus preformed His first miracle.  Some people get so caught up on this particular miracle and what it actually means.  Was Jesus really promoting drunkardness? Why would Jesus be at a wedding/party where there would be drinking? And my personal favorite is, if Jesus turned the water into “cheap” wine would it still be as miraculous of a miracle?  All of these questions are ridiculous and to be honest cause bad theology.  But I want to focus on a different aspect of this miracle; I want to look at a particular person.  I don’t want to focus on the actual miracle in itself, but I want to look at the servants.  We know that servants in Biblical times had a very strict rules that they were to follow, and if they did not they could possibly lose their life.  Well when Jesus was informed about running out of wine He finds the servants and some pots and tells them to fill them with water.  Now because Jesus had not started His ministry yet and they did not know His power, the servants were probably not too excited to be getting orders from a man to go fetch some water when they were out of WINE!  But because of their duties they obeyed and when they returned they probably felt as that this Jesus man was about to humiliate them, because He told them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.  I believe that when they drew it out it was still water, but sometime during the delivery is when it was turned to wine.  Could you imagine the felling the servants felt as they were taking a glass of water to the master, it was almost like they were taking their own sentence to death.  They must have been shaking in their sandals as the first sip was taken, and then to find that they were safe because it was even better tasting then the wine before.  But I have to believe that the real reason why they were shaking was because they knew where it had been drawn from, and when they were dismissed they knew that a miracle had been preformed!  I would have loved to see their expressions when they returned back to where Jesus was and fell down on their faces in awe of Him, because it was at that moment when they realized who He really was!  The reason why this miracle is so important is not because of the literal turning water to wine, yes that is a miracle in itself, but the true miracle is the fact that it was the FIRST time that people really truly believed that Jesus was Lord.
